PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Members,

As I compose my last President’s Letter, I am amazed at how quickly this year has passed.  The year 2002, though economically unstable for stock market investors has been successful at the Kansas Geological Society.  Our goal of operating in the black has been achieved along with several other goals.  We now own a reproduction machine that is able to scan information to be archived.  Through the Technical Talks arranged by Bob Cowdery, we have been able to offer our members the ability to receive accredited hours necessary to continue as Licensed State Geologists at no charge.   We’ve been able to support and insure 4 employees (plus one part-time geology student).  Additionally, we have contributed heavily to the Robert Walters Digital Library.  It is difficult to put a dollar amount on the value of the data, but it is substantial.  As in the last several years, the Society and the Library have both needed much hands on attention, but as I’m sure my fellow Board Members and Committee Chairs will agree it has been a satisfying and worthy commitment.

This Bulletin  is showcasing our nominees for the 2003 KGS Officers and Board.  As an observer at the nominating committee meeting, I was able to see first hand the careful selection given by the past presidents to arrive at this excellent list of nominees.  All the candidates are well qualified and it should be a very close vote.

Doug Davis has been updating me on the 2003 Banquet which will be held in January.  He is working hard to make it a very pleasant evening to enjoy with your spouse or date.  This will also be a good time to meet the new Board Members.

At this time, I would like to thank everyone that helped make this such a great year.  Some of them will be recognized at the banquet, but please thank your board members and committee chairs and members for their time and effort.  They will be happy to hear they’ve been appreciated.

Thank you for letting me serve as your Kansas
Geological Society President, 2002.

Debra FitzGerald
