August 2002 Board Meeting (continued) Ms. Fitzgerald updated the Board on the Kansas Geologic Society Annual Picnic held at ALLSTAR Sports Entertainment on August 2, 2002. . Attendance was up, from 179 last year to 201 this year. The change of location of the picnic was well received by the members and the overwhelming consensus of the attendees was positive. Cory Baker and Brian Wilhite did an excellent job of putting together this years KGS picnic. Technical Meetings scheduled for September include: Dr. Rolfe Mandel, Geomorphologist and Geoarcheologist, Topeka, KS, “The Effects of Late Quaternary Landscape Evolution on the Archeological Record of the Central Plains of North America” September 12, 2002. Dr. Michael Brady Visiting Petroleum Geologist, KSU, Year 2002-03, “Exploration History and Hydrocarbon Potential of Somalia” September 18, 2002. Old Business: Digital Library Update (Pricing Committee Report) – Ms. Radford updated the Board on possible pricing of Digital Library memberships. The consensus of the Board was that pricing for the Digital Library should encourage qualified individuals to join the KGS Library as well as the Digital Library. Phase one of the Digital Library scanning is complete at this time. It is estimated that 35% of the Library cabinet volume has been scanned. KGS sublease of server space to Net Impact Software (NIS). NIS is currently reviewing the lease agreement. The KGS has incurred $887.00 in attorney fees by Martin, Pringle, Oliver, Wallace & Bauer for writing and reviewing the NIS agreement. Ms. Fitzgerald reported the KGS and KGF Digital Library Booth was well attended at the KIOGA convention and the Digital Library software demonstrations elicited many favorable comments.
New
Business: Ms. Fitzgerald discussed security concerns at the KGS
Library. The Board agreed security cameras should be installed in
the KGS Library. Ms. Radford will research the cost of security camera
systems.
September 2002 Board Meeting The following report is a summary of the September 10, 2002 regular KGS Board meeting. The official minutes of all KGS Board meetings are available at the KGS Library. Ms. Radford reported that as of August 31, there were 606 Society members and 175 Library members who have paid their 2002 dues. The KGS Library showed a net loss for the month of August of $2,163.83. Average billing for the month was $671.04/day with the monthly total billed of $14,762.86. The KGS is continuing to evaluate various software accounting packages. The front-runner at this time is an accounting program named MAS90. Motion was approved by the Board to allocate up to $5,000 for the purchase of new accounting software for the KGS. Mr. Fisher reported on the finances. The Trust Company of Kansas actual account market value loss for 2002 is $10,107.34. The annual rate of return as of August 31, 2002 is a negative 5.115%. Total account balance, Treasury Bills and Trust Company of Kansas as of August 31, 2002 is $467,462.96. The $160,000 T-Bill matured August 29, 2002. The money has been put into savings and is available for investment. Motion was approved by the Board to invest the money into two certificates of deposit in the amounts of $100,000 and $60,000 at the best rates available for no longer than two years at separate FDIC insured institutions.
Mr. Cowdery reported on his progress with the KGS Technical Sessions for
the fall of 2002. The Board thanked Mr. Cowdery for his exceptional
work as the Technical Session Chairman. The KGS Field trip to the
Sternberg Museum in Hays, Kansas will be scheduled next spring. Mr.
Cowdery is conducting a mailing to KESTA asking for nominations for the
State Rock, Mineral and Fossil. Mr. Cowdery discussed with the Board
the possibility of a return visit by Astronaut/Geologist Dr. Jim Reilly.
Mr. Cowdery is also researching the possibility of a continuing education
course in PowerPoint.
