In 2000, the Kansas Geological Foundation began raising money to digitally scan and preserve the information in the Kansas Geological Society Library.  By August, 2001, a total of $450,000 in gifts and pledges had been raised and scanning of documents was begun.  At the same time, software development for viewing the information across the Internet was also begun by Net Impact Software, Inc. and their proprietary software, Imaging Explorer.  This unique client / server internet software operates independently of commonly used and limiting browser technology.

Although the pledges made by supporters of the project has taken us quite far in our goal of scanning and preserving the KGS library, it is a massive project requiring an additional $300,000.00 to finish our preservation in the west ranges and a sizable portion of the east ranges.  Originally, we did not include any of the information in the east ranges in our plan.  With increased interest in eastern Kansas, we have expanded the area to include a large portion of eastern Kansas (see PHASE FOUR area).  This expanded our proposed budget. As we all know, eastern Kansas information is less organized and will require extra effort to organize and tie the scanned images to the proper wells.

Other future areas include our neighboring out-of-state areas of Eastern Colorado, Northern Oklahoma, Nebraska (except for the panhandle D-J basin area), Missouri, and SW Iowa.

As shown on the DESIGN PHASES map, we have separated the core of the Central Kansas Uplift into PHASE THREE.  This is due to the  extra effort involved in identifying and linking documents to the wells, their washdowns, and twinned locations.  We know the extra effort involved from our experience in our past inventory database work.

If interest is high enough and funds become available, however, we will add the necessary staff to merge PHASE TWO and PHASE THREE into one area and continue northward in PHASE TWO from township 29S to township 01S without by-passing the uplift area.
