Meeting
The following report is a summary of the April 9, 2002 regular KGS Board meeting. The official minutes of all KGS Board meetings are available at the KGS Library. Ms. Radford reported that as of March 31, there were 593 Society members and 167 Library members who have paid their 2002 dues. The KGS Library showed a net gain for the month of March of $5,636.40. Average billing for the month was $613/day with the monthly total billed of $12,872. The Library is leasing postal equipment from Pitney Bowes. The Board also discussed staffing at the KGS Library and the lack of personnel to help cover the extended hours on Thursday nights. The Board approved a motion to offer Ms. Thresher a full time position on the KGS Library staff contingent upon Ms. Thresher’s acceptance to work on Thursday nights at the Business Managers discretion. Mr. Fisher reported on the finances. The Trust Company of Kansas actual account market value gain for 2002 is $3,889.91. The annual rate of return as of March 31, 2002 is .019%. Total account balance, Treasury Bills and Trust Company of Kansas as of March 31, 2002 is $485,435.13. Chris Walker and Paul Fowler representing The Trust Company of Kansas (TCK) reviewed The Kansas Geological Society’s account. The account balance is $205,435.13, as of March 31, 2002. The annual rate of return as of March 31, 2002 is .019%. The KGS account is a conservative growth, level 2, investment account. TCK’s fee structure is based on percentage of assets, billed Quarterly. The Board was updated on possible pricing scenarios for the Digital Library.
New business:
Mr. Fred James, representing the Kansas Geological Foundation, met with
the KGS Board and discussed the Walter’s Digital Library operating agreement.
The KGF is the owner of the Digital Library and the KGS will be the operator
of the Digital Library. Mr. James reviewed the current agreement
between the KGF and KGS, and discussed items that need clarification in
the final operating agreement.
May 2002 Board Meeting The following report is a summary of the May 14, 2002 regular KGS Board meeting. The official minutes of all KGS Board meetings are available at the KGS Library. Ms. Radford reported that as of April 30, there were 597 Society members and 171 Library members who have paid their 2002 dues. The KGS Library showed a net gain for the month of April of $12,576.72. Average billing for the month was $840.50/day with the monthly total billed of $18,491.03. Ms. Sherri Thresher has accepted a full time position on the KGS Library staff. Mr. Fisher reported on the finances. The Trust Company of Kansas actual account market value gain for 2002 is $1,755.77. The annual rate of return as of April 30, 2002 is 1.663%. The $160,000 Treasury Bill was renewed March 28, 2002. Interest income from the T-Bill was $1,496.00. Total account balance, Treasury Bills and Trust Company of Kansas as of March 31, 2002 is $484,053.21. Society Activities and Technical Meetings scheduled for May include: Videotape Seminar May 9, 2002. Kansas Geological Foundation Mixer May 15, 2002. KGS 18th Annual Fishing Tournament at Kingman County State Lake May 17, 2002. James Kinser, KSU “ Depositional Analysis of the Lower Skinner Sandstone on the Cherokee Platform of Payne County Oklahoma” May 23, 2002. Net Impact Software (NIS), which is scanning the Digital Library and writing the software for it, is looking for office space to install servers and a high-speed Internet connection. The high-speed connection would most likely be a T1 line. NIS is interested in using a portion of the KGS Library space in return for allowing the KGS to use their connection during the off hours. The KGS is currently storing the scanning data for the Digital Library on hard drives and then shipping them to Denver via Federal Express. Access to a high-speed connection would allow the KGS to transmit scanned data daily to Denver. The Board approved a motion to form an ad Hoc committee to meet (continued on page 30) |
