EXPLORATION HIGHLIGHTS
By John H. Morrison, III
Independent Oil and Gas Service

1)  Murfin Drilling Company Completes Wildcat (IOG Weekly News 10/28/02)

Murfin Drilling Company, Wichita (KS), has opened an new unnamed oil field in western Cheyenne County with the successful completion of their #2-33 Marvin, located in approxmately NW SE in section 33-T2S-R41W. The well was drilled to a logged total depth of 5052 feet last July by Company rotary tools. Brad Rine served as well site geologist. On August 14th, operator completed the well and put it on pump for an undisclosed production rate. The Marvin discovery well is producing crude from pipe perforations made in the Lansing-Kansas City formation.

Murfin’s new discovery lies nearly one mile southeast of five Company-operated wells in the Raile oil field, covering portions of sections 29 through 32-T2S-R41W, a Lansing-Kansas City and Marmaton oil field which they established in mid-1998. The wells were completed for daily rates ranging from 20 to 107 barrels of oil per day from productive LKC zones typically between 4600 to 4800 feet in depth. The new field is also located about 1-1/4 miles northwest of  the Cherry Creek oil field which has produced LKC oil since 1976. The Marvin lease is located 3-3/4 miles north and 6 miles west of St. Francis, Kansas.

2) DEKA Exploration Reports Gas Discovery (IOG Weekly News 10/28/02)

DEKA Exploration, of Oklahoma City (OK), has discovered Morrow gas reserves in western Greeley County, almost two miles east of abandoned Morrow producer in the Second Wind field in Kiowa County, Colorado. New discovery was made at the firm’s #1-12 Schardein, spotted In NW NW SE in section 12-T17S-R43W, about 7 miles north and 12 miles west of the city of Horace, Kansas. The well was drilled to a rotary total depth of 5200 feet last June and encountered the top of the Morrow formation at 4959 (-1085 KB).  Operator opened pay zone by perforating through casing from 4985 to 4992 and 4993 to 5003 feet. The well began first sales on October 15th at a flowing rate of 456 MCF gas daily, no water, and is producing pay naturally without any acid stimulation.

The Schardein lease is located nearly midway between the two closest Kansas oil and gas fields in the vicinity - the Stockholm Southwest to the north In sections 11 and 12-T16S-R43W and the Moore-Johnson to the south in section 2-T18S-R43W. The two prolific fields produce Morrow oil only. Actual closest production lies to the west of the Schardein lease in Eastern Colorado’s Second Wind field in section 8-T17S-R41W. In 1997, Wiepking-Fullerton Energy, LLC completed its #1-8 Watson Farms for 2.44 million cubic feet of gas per day from Morrow zone at 5064 to 5072 feet. The well has since been plugged and abandoned. DEKA’s new discovery awaits a new field name.

3) Strata Exploration Finals Second Discovery in Haskell County (IOG Weekly News 10/28/02)

Strata Exploration, of Fairfield (Ill), has completed its second Mississippian gas discovery in Haskell County at the #1 Tindall-Spanier, located in approximately SW SW NE in section 28-T-29S-R32W, northeast of the town of Sublette. The 5635 foot deep well is producing an unknown volume of natural gas from the Saint Louis formation effective October 11, 2002. Discovery site is located slightly over one mile southwest of Strata’s #1 Stoops-Webber, SW SE in section 22, which was State tested at a 1-point Calculated Open Flow rate of 932 MCF gas daily, no water, last May. This was Stratas’ first discovery that also produced natural gas from Saint Louis zone at a depth of 5515 to 5521 feet. Both fields remain unnamed.

4) Redland Resources Finals Comanche Wildcat (IOG Weekly News 11/25/01)

Redland Resources, of Oklahoma City (OK), has discovered new Mississippian oil and gas reserves at a wildcat well located 3/4-mile south of the multipay Aetna Gas Area in southeastern Comanche County, about 1-1/4 miles north of the Oklahoma state line. The #11-3 Ballet, spotted in approximately C W/2 NE NW in section 11-T35s-R16W, is producing 15 barrels of oil, 10 barrels of water and 30 MCF natural gas per day from the Mississippian formation. Operator used Duke Drilling tools to drill the well to a total depth of 5450 ft. Top of the Mississippian Detrital was found at 5224 (-3383 KB), according to logs. Pay zone was perforated in four sets from 5252 to 5272, 5294 to 5300, 5306 to 5318 and 5322 to 5332 ft. Zone was acidized and fracture-treated. Crude gravity is 40 degrees API.

The new unnamed pool opener lies about 1-1/2 miles northwest of Redland’s #12-16 Michael that was completed in March this year for 5 barrels of oil, 5 barrels of water and 50 MCF gas per day. Located in the S/2 SE/4 of section 12-T35s-R16W, the well discovered Mississippian pay from 5246 to 5326 ft. overall and established the new Yellowstone East field. The two producing areas are located about 21 miles west of the city of Hardtner.
