PRESIDENT'S LETTER
KGS Members,

     KGS Members:

If the first six weeks of the year is any indication I will be a very busy person this year.

The Board's first order of business this year was to find someone to fill the vacancy left when Scott Mueller stepped down from his position as director.  I am pleased to announce that Dallas Donner has agreed to serve in Scott's place for this year.  We appreciate Dallas' willingness to serve on the board,  he will be a great asset.

This year has started off on a good note for the Geological Society with our annual banquet.  We had the pleasure of honoring a long list of 50 year members, as well as our honorary members Glen Thrasher and Joseph Moreland.    There were 189 guests in attendance who were treated to a fine meal and entertainment.  Fred James and his grandson entertained after supper with music by the Ben Kincaid Quintet.  The banquet was a big success thanks to the efforts of Doug Davis.  Doug will be relinquishing his duties as Banquet Chairman to Marjorie Crane who will take over next year.

Dr. Wan Yang with Wichita State University has organized a Field and Laboratory workshop on the Sedimentology and Stratigraphic Architecture of Upper Pennsylvanian Oread Cyclothem in Shelf-to-Delta Transition Zone, SE Kansas and NE Oklahoma.  This will include a one day field trip and 3 hour lab session the following day.  This workshop is scheduled for March 29-30 and will be co-sponsored by Wichita State University and the Kansas Geological Society.  Members will have the option to register for this workshop through the University and receive 1 University Credit hour which would count for 45 CEU's toward re-certification, or sign up at the KGS and receive 8 CEU's for the field trip and 4 CEU's for the lab. Costs for KGS members is estimated at $35 for transportation, food and guidebook.  University registration will be additional.  There is limited space available for this workshop so if you are interested be sure to sign up soon.

A date for the KGS golf tournament has been determined and this event will be held at Hidden Lakes golf course on June 16th 1:30 PM.  The starting time has been changed from early morning to give some of our out of town members a chance to participate without having to leave western Kansas or other parts of the world in the middle of the night.  I hope this will encourage more participation from our out of town members as we need to keep them involved with society activities.

Bob Cowdery has done a fine job of scheduling technical talks for the remainder of this spring session – 12 at the time of this writing, with the possibility of a couple more.  Plan to schedule your Wednesday lunch hours around these presentations for your own benefit.  Hope to see you there.

Best Regards

Timothy G. Pierce
