Independent producer
Knighton Oil Company, of Wichita (KS), reports the discovery of new Mississippian
oil and gas
Well site is located
about 1-1/4 miles northeast of established production in the CLW Field,
which produces oil from the Lansing-Kansas City formation and natural gas
from the Mississippian zone. A “show hole”, #1 Romersi, spotted about one-quarter
mile to the south in the same section, was drilled and abandoned in 1978.
However, the well did reveal gas shows in the Mississippian from 4610 to
4668 ft. (-2417 to -2475 KB) and oil shows from 4663 to 4686 ft. (-2470
to -2493 KB). Knighton Oil drilled their Rosproy well to a total depth
of 4695 ft. Hole is plugged-back to a depth of 4657 ft. The new unnamed
field is situated 4 miles south and 3-1/2 miles east of Kinsley, Kansas.

Ritchie Exploration,
Inc., Wichita (Ks), has established a new unnamed oil field in eastern
Scott County, near the Scott
The wildcat well was drilled to a rotary total depth of 4615 ft. last October, using a drilling rig owned and operated by L. D. Drilling. First oil sales started on November 14, 2002. Production comes from the Johnson Zone in the Cherokee group. No production rates have been reported. Ritchie’s new oil strike lies about 1-3/4 miles due west of another one of their new pool discoveries, the #1 M. Wilkens, spotted in approximately NE NW NE in section 5-T17s-R30W, in Lane County. The well opened the Brand Southwest oil field in June 2002 and has produced over 4200 barrels of oil from the Lansing-Kansas City formation during its first four months on production. Closest known Cherokee production from the Gusing Trust well is situated 3-1/2 miles away in the Manning Townsite pool. (back to top of page)
Anadarko Petroleum Corp. has discovered new natural gas reserves at it’s #1 HJV Lahey ‘A’, located in approximately SW NW of section 34-T29s-R35W, in Grant County, southwest Kansas. The wildcat well
is producing an undisclosed amount of gas from the Morrow formation.
First gas sales commenced in January 2003. Murfin Drilling tools were
used to drill the well to a total depth of 5700 ft. The new pool
opener lies 1-1/4 miles north of four Anadarko producers on the Ahern ‘A’
lease in section 3-T30s-R35W, where the Marmaton and Morrow formations
have produced oil since July last year. They are a part of the Ryus field.
Also, Anadarko has produced oil and gas from the Morrow and Mississippian
Chester zones at two wells on their Crocker ‘A’ lease in section 35-T29S-R35W
since February last year. The wells are over 1-1/4 miles away in the Ryus
North field. The new field is tentatively designated as Ryus Northwest,
and is located 3/4-mile south and 1-1/2 miles west of the town of Ryus.

An exploratory well drilled by Wichita-based Mull Drilling Company has identified a new isolated Cherokee Sand oil reservoir at site surrounded by three existing oil fields, but separated from all nearby production by dry holes. The #1-3 McDonald ‘A’, spotted in approximately N/2 SE SW in section 3-T19s-R24W, was put on pump on December 27, 2002 at an undisclosed rate. The 4,440 ft.
deep well lies slightly over one-half mile south of a Cherokee producer
that established the McDonald East field in 1977, and produced over 12,000
barrels of oil from a depth of 4337 to 4346 ft. Discovery site is also
located about same distance north of a Mississippian oil well in the Franklinville
field that was completed for 45 barrels of oil per day in 1989 from Mississippian
at 4355 to 4359 ft. To the west by about 3/4-mile, Cherokee and Mississippian
oil is also being produced in the McDonald field. Mull’s new oil
field has not been named.
