new way of using the internet to transmit large
images cannot be underestimated in the success
of this project.
When scanning is completed sometime next
year, the geologic data of the entire western
ranges will be available for viewing and
downloading. In addition, the Kansas Geologi-
cal Society will hold an archival copy of the im-
ages of all the material they own. Those images
serve as insurance against a catastrophic loss
and will allow the KGS Library to recreate any
lost material. The Kansas Geological Society
will manage the Walters Digital Library and
revenues derived from the operation of the li-
brary will be shared between the Kansas Geo-
logical Foundation and the Kansas Geological
Society.
The Kansas Geological Foundation invites
you try out the new Dr. Robert F. Walters Digi-
tal Geological Library. We know you'll like
what you see. Subscriptions are available im-
mediately to allow you to begin taking advan-
tage of this new and exciting way to work with
Kansas geologic data.

The Robert F. Walters Digital Geological
Library is open for business. The project, born
nearly four years ago to scan and preserve the
data in the Kansas Geological Society Library,
with the side benefit of offering those scanned
images over the internet has finally become a
reality. Members can obtain the program by
going to the Robert F. Walters Digital Geologi-
cal Library website at www.rfwgeolibrary.com
on the internet and downloading the demonstra-
tion software onto their computer. Instructions
for downloading the software and signing up to
view the demonstration township in Harper
County are on the website.
Two new features have been added to the
final subscription version. The first new feature
is the ability to stitch together pages of a long
document so the subscriber can create a custom
log of a well of interest. Once stitched together,
the custom log can be scrolled from top to bot-
tom in the viewing window without having to
wait for each page to be downloaded. The sec-
ond new feature is the ability to view two logs
in the viewing window, side-by-side.
Introductory subscription prices to the
Robert F. Walters Digital Geological Library
remain unchanged. Members of the Kansas
Geological Society Library can enroll for
$600.00 per year. Non-members can enroll for
$1,500.00 per year. There is no extra charge for
viewing images on the screen. Images
downloaded or printed from the library will
complement those charged by the KGS Library.
Scout cards will be charged at $1.00/card, other
documents will be charged at $0.50 per page
and entire logs will be charged at $10.00 per
log.
The Robert F. Walters Digital Library was
created by the Kansas Geological Foundation,
in cooperation with the Kansas Geological Soci-
ety, to preserve the documents contained in the
KGS Library against loss due to fire, flood or
other catastrophes. Net Impact Software has
developed the viewing software that has created
a fast connection with an intuitive work area.
