Advisory Council Meeting

Mid-Continent Section Meeting - Tulsa, OK,
October 10-14, 2003
The primary activity of the Mid-Continent Sec-
tion will be the semi-annual meeting to be held in
Tulsa. This meeting commences on Saturday, Octo-
ber 10th with a joint AAPG/SEPM Field Trip,
"Sequence Stratigraphy and Depositional Dynamics
of the Atokan Formation-Northwest Arkansas"
On Saturday, October 11, there will be two short
courses: "ACCESS for Independents: Web-Based
Petroleum Reservoir and Play Characterization, and
Modeling in the Public Domain: Gemini Applica-
tion" and "Structural Styles and Hydrocarbon Traps
in Compressive Basins."
Saturday Evening, Dr. Jack Bacon, NASA, will
make a Community Education Presentation, "There's
Gold in That There Vacuum." There will be two ad-
ditional short courses on Sunday: "National Geology
Licensure Preparation" and "Structural Styles and
Hydrocarbon Traps in Compressive Basins". At
4:00 PM the Opening Session will commence with
an address by the Mayor of Tulsa . This will be fol-
lowed by the MCS Awards Ceremony. The Exhib-
its, with the traditional icebreaker will commence at
5:00 PM.
On Monday and Tuesday, four workshops will be
available to attendees: "Frontiers of Petroleum E&P:
New Technologies from Government Research
Labs"; "E&P Practices That Work in Mature Basins
of North America"; "Watershed and Floodplain
Management from a Geological Perspective" and
Keys to Profitable Acquisitions of Oil and Gas Pro-
ducing Properties."
Starting Sunday at 1:00 PM and extending
through Tuesday afternoon there will be nine Oral
Sessions: "Stearns Symposium: New Structural Plays
and Concepts, Southern Mid-Continent: A Sympo-
sium Honoring Dr. David Stearns"; "Evolution of
New Play Concepts: What's Next for the Mid-
Continent?"; "Case Histories of Successful Applica-
tion of Geochemistry"; "Enhanced Geological Pre-
diction from Data Mining'; "Coal Bed Methane:
What makes for Economic Success?"; "The Conflu-
ence of New Technologies and Old Shows, Fields,
and Plays: Case Histories"; "Stratigraphic and Sedi-
mentologic Resolution of Mid-Continent Reservoir
Units (Organized by the SEPM)"; "Hot Plays of the
Basins of the Mid-Continent: An Open, Facilitated
Forum"; New Technologies and Geologic Insights in
the Practice of Environmental Geoscience."
There will be Poster/Core Sessions on Monday
and Tuesday. The All Convention Luncheon on
Monday will feature a presentation by Michael Ba-
horich, Past-President of the SEG. A number of
Guest/Spouse activities are scheduled and a Hospi-
tality Suite will be available. Tom Harrold and Ca-
sey Clawson are General Co-Chairs for this meet-

Ardmore Geological Society - Mike Allison ,
President.
The Ardmore Geological Society will be having
their first meeting of the New Year on September 11,
2003. The Society' s year is from September to May
of the following year. Meetings are from 6-9 PM on
the second Thursday of each month. The customary
location is the Chickasaw Lake Club, a private
sportsman club which was founded in approximately
1903; prior to Oklahoma statehood.
For the Ardmore Geological Society, plans are
being made to host a geological field trip this year
for the Mid-Continent Section. Also, Bob Allen, a
Honorary member of the Society, is chairing the
Stearn's Symposium on Sunday, October 12, at the
Mid - Continent Convention in Tulsa. Lastly, on
October 9, the Society will be having their annual
golf Tournament at Derrick Hills Golf Course. This
golf course was designed by Perry Maxwell and is
one of the most picturesque in Oklahoma.

The Society basically works on a school calendar
year, generally with two dinner/meetings in the fall
and two in the spring. We will have a spring field
trip and sometimes one in the fall. Attendance at
meetings averages between 30 and 40 and always
includes several area college geology students.
This past year our dinner/meetings included:
(1) Scott Bruner, P.E., Deputy Director of the Arkan-
sas Oil and Gas Commission spoke on his commin-
gle study of Arkoma natural gas production, entitled
"Two years in review: Phase II"
(2) Dr. Kevin J. Smart, Assistant Professor in the
ANNOUNCEMENT & SPECIAL EVENTS
